Patrick Mahomes is the real boss as he saves Worthy and takes blame for his mistake

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy seemed destined for a breakout game during the opening stages of Sunday’s 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

In a thrilling first quarter, Worthy hauled in four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, setting a career-high in receptions while adding seven rushing yards as part of a dynamic offensive package that featured him in motion and out of the backfield.

Yet, despite his electric start, Worthy’s role inexplicably diminished as the game progressed. Early in the second quarter, he streaked wide open down the sideline for what should have been a big gain

However, the pass was ruled incomplete as Worthy couldn’t get both feet in bounds, with Patrick Mahomes later admitting his throw led the rookie too close to the sideline.

“I mean, it’s probably just me just throwing it more in bounds to [Worthy] that’s wide open for a touchdown,” Mahomes said.

“So, if I throw it in bounds, it’s a walk in touchdown. I have to be better there.

“Xavier came out hot, making plays. Hopefully we can keep him more involved throughout the entirety of the game. That goes with me giving him chances.”

This marked the second straight week Mahomes and Worthy narrowly missed connecting on a potential game-changing deep ball.

Last week, the Chiefs overcame a similar missed opportunity in a victory over Denver. This time, the misfire proved more consequential in a tightly contested game.
