Naturally, Angel’s announcement raises questions about how much she’ll make in the WNBA
It’s got time for Angel Reese. Today, the 21-year-old women’s basketball forward officially declared for the WNBA draft, foregoing her final year of eligibility at Louisiana State University.
And because Angel doesn’t do anything “basic,” she announced the news by way of a stunning Vogue photoshot.
“I’ve done everything I wanted to in college,” Angel told the outlet. “I’ve won a national championship, I’ve gotten [Southeastern Conference] Player of the Year, I’ve been an All-American. My ultimate goal is to be a pro—and to be one of the greatest basketball players to play, ever. I feel like I’m ready.”
“VOGUE, I got REAL issues,” she joked in an accompanying Instagram post.
Of course, Angel is a big name in college basketball, becoming front and center on and off the court. And thanks to her Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals, she’s making some big bucks. But more on that in a sec…
Since the Bayou Barbie’s arrival on the LSU campus in 2022, she has come out on top a number of times: She won the 2023 NCAA National Championship (which drew in 9.9 million viewers, the tournament’s biggest audience to date), she won an ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete in 2023, and made history for breaking several records in just one season.
Oh, and her hefty earnings from her multiple NIL deals are pretty impressive, too. (BTW, NIL deals, which became effective in 2021, are “an agreement or arrangement between a student-athlete and a third party, such as a brand, company or individual, where the student-athlete receives compensation for the use of their name, image and likeness,” per NCSA.) Angel helped turn the LSU program into a powerhouse, and in return, she’s obtained numerous partnerships, placing her in the top ten highest-earning college athletes, per On3.
Naturally, Angel’s announcement raises questions about how much she’ll make in the WNBA. Ahead, here’s a breakdown of Angel’s net worth.
Angel is a Maryland native and growing up, her parents encouraged her to try out different sports like ballet, swimming, and track and field. But basketball was the sport she fell in love with, per Marca.
Athleticism definitely runs in Angel’s family—her mother, Angel Webb Reese, played basketball in college and professionally, her father was also a hooper and a wrestler, and her brother, Julian, currently plays at the University of Maryland, per Teen Vogue.
She played on her high school’s varsity basketball team at Baltimore’s St. Frances Academy, and received 24 different scholarship offers from Division 1 programs, according to Teen Vogue. Angel eventually committed to the University of Maryland and played two seasons there before transferring to LSU in May 2022 to play under coach Kim Mulkey.
