It’s no secret that Prince William, Princess Kate, and their children have a close bond with the Middletons. Carole and Michael are especially hands-on grandparents to George, Charlotte, and Louis and provided a sense of normalcy for the young royals.
But that’s not to say that the trio don’t have a very special relationship with their other grandfather, the King.
While Charles’s extraordinary role means his relationship with William and Kate’s children is unusual, he remains a doting and affectionate grandpa – and both he and Camilla can also help mentor the youngsters about life within the royal family, and what their future will entail.
“They’re getting a very different experience with them,” Katie Nicholl, author of The New Royals, told OK magazine. “They’re getting a taste of life at Balmoral, Christmas at Sandringham and, on a more epic scale, events like the Coronation and the Queen’s funeral. So the children are getting the best of both worlds.”
King Charles is known as ‘Grandpa Wales’ by George, Charlotte, and Louis – and he has an altogether different nickname given to him by Queen Camilla’s grandchildren. According to Tom Parker Bowles, Camilla’s only son, the King is known as ‘Uppa’.
Speaking on the Times Royals podcast, Kate Mansey explained: “Tom Parker-Bowles revealed he still calls Charles ‘sir’ and has done for years and is never going to change, calling his stepdad ‘sir’ but his children call him Uppa. Itβs just a childhood, toddler-ish nickname they made up for him and it has sort of stuck. They just go ‘hi Uppa’ and he’s there sort of bowing.”
