Meghan Markle has stressed that she does not like to use the surname of ‘Markle’ and instead prefers to be referred to Meghan Sussex.
In a new Netflix cookery show, Meghan actually went so far as to correct celebrity friend Mindy Kayling for using the wrong name.
The two were talking about their upbringings and what sort of food they ate, with Meghan calling herself a ‘latchkey kid’ who ‘grew up with a lot of fast food and TV tray dinners’, listing off US chains Pollo Loco, Taco Bell and Jack In The Box.
An awkward moment
That was when Mindy made the mistake that caused some tension. Her response was: “I don’t think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack In The Box and loves it.”
Meghan managed to smile as she then said to Mindy: “It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle, you know I’m Sussex now.”
Meghan then explained that having children was what made her properly drop the Markle name.
“You have kids and you go ‘No, I share my name with my children’.
I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me but it just means so much to go ‘This is OUR family name.
Our little family name’,” she explained.
Mindy’s slightly awkward response was: “Well now I know and I love it.”
Speaking to People Magazine in an interview released on Monday, Meghan said: “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children.
“I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together.
It means a lot to me.”
She added that the ‘Sussex’ name was part of her and Prince Harry’s ‘love story’.
